Thank you Klytos!Klytos wrote:Uhanimar = If you figure out how to smudge the pixels into a smooth non-pixeled color type thing, let me know as it's something I've been working on for a while and can't figure out either.
Rog = You're a tit...
BlackThorne = The docking bay is starting to look very good. I like the sharpness of the floor and walls, and the machine thing on the rightside wall. I still think the shuttlepod looks weird, I can't figure out why though, I'll sleep on it....

Very nice Rog. Also experiment a bit with light and dark. Save a copy experiment and well if it doesn't look right you can always go back to the saved copy.
That's what I do most of the time. Most things in my paintings are actually drawn 2 or more times.
For instance try to apply the dodge tool to every part of the rock that sticks out (sometimes it works and well .. sometimes it just won't :-) ).
Regards, Ron AF Greve
PS: Hey, does this mean we lost an animator ;)

Hi Alliance,
Certainly not bad for a first picture. I think however you need a bit more texture on the rocks.
Here is how I usually paint rocks (this also for BT earlier request how I do things).
Equipment:
Linux RH 9, Gimp (almost the latest version, sorry forgot which one exactly) + wacom board drivers (not made by wacom though), P4, 2.53GHZ and 1GB internal memory. Wacom pressure sensitive, drawing tablet. I really find the latter important to draw, unfortunately they are rather expensive :-( . Well on the other hand, I have seen pictures of artist completely done with mouse that let my jaws hanging somewhere around my ankles :-)
Technique:
Well actually I think most people draw rocks more or less they way.
I first create a grey color then add some blue to it. Now I pull the V slider of the HSV control to a very low value (creating almost black, but not completely). I then fill the area where I want the rock to appear in a sepparate layer.
Then I turn on the preserve transparency checkbox which will prevent further drawing operations outside the already painted area.
Now I pull up the V-slider of the HSV control to a very light value. I try to paint the area's that should be highlighted (usually on top of the rock ofcourse).
Now use the smudge tool and pull the black area up and the white area down and blend edges together. Look at photo's and images of rocks to get a feeling of what a rock looks like.
After a lot of smudging you might add highlights. Use the dodge tool to make some parts of the top area sparkle for instance or use the paintbrush with a very light color.
As a final result you might try to add radiosity. If the stone is near green grass you might expect some of it to reflect on the stone. Use the color of the grass for instance and the paintbrush to add some to the stone.
But for all, experiment with different tools and settings and look how real :-) artist do it.
Hope this was a bit useful.
Regards, Ron AF Greve.

I decided to collect to one post some of our mostly finished SQ2 pictures. Currently I have chosen only 320x200 -pictures. I included also small, personal comments concerning each background.
The docking bay; Mostly finished.

The cliff; Needs still a little improving.

The chasm; Looks really good, but the style must be standardized with the style of myself and Bt.

The game's starting screen; Needs a little details, otherwise it looks very good.

The "tower"; The picture needs sharpening.

The underwater cave; Looks good.

The waterfall cave; Looks good.

The vinetrap maze; The vine needs to be improved.

The mailbox screen; Looks again really good, but the style must be standardized with the style of myself and Bt.

The tube; The planet needs "glowing" atmosphere.

Yes, Rog I noitced. JML leaves out half of the images in this thread. Besides that I don't think it is a good idea to repost all images again. The idea of collecting them somewhere is good I think. But what if we come to 30 pictures or so the forum would become unusable if you would repost them all.
Maybe we could collect them somewhere on a webpage outside the forum?

Oh, sorry, Rog. I edited my post, and your picture is there now.
As I said, I included currently just 320x200 -pictures to my post. SQ2 uses 320x200 -resolution. If I would have included also all the 640x400 -backgrounds we have made, the post would have became very long. And yes, it would be a better idea to create a website for the backgrounds.

If somebody makes up the html, I can host a website to display all our pictures at www.infamous-adventures.com . That way, we can see all we've done without cluttering a forum here.

Ahem. Anyway, hopefully later this week I'll get some kind of page posted where a collection of these images can be found, as NOT TO CLUTTER UP THIS FORUM (as someone is already good at doing that). Here we can post new images, talk about them, and show what you're working on.
I'll have two NEW screens to show on Thursday. So, hopefully, we'll get some more ARTIST activity here.

I've just had A LOT of free time lately. I don't have school or work, so I've been doing a lot of game related work during the day.Angelus3K wrote:Bt, one would think you werent already working on another project with all these backgrounds your making ;)
