I believe they're working on KQ1VGA 3.0 and KQ2+VGA 2.0 before they set their sights on QfG2VGA.
_______________
Ian Watson
http://www.wolf-spoor.org

3.0 & 2.0

#55 Post by Wolfgang Abenteuer » Fri Mar 14, 2003 11:36 pm

They are more recent versions of the games. In this case, KQ1VGA 3.0 will be compiled with a newer version of AGS which has a few more features than it had when KQ1VGA was originally released. That, and a few bugs that remained will be worked out so that v3.0 (the final release) will be top-notch and bug-free. There are also some minor additions, such as a hand icon for the inventory screen, a better looking inventory screen, etc.

As for KQ2VGA 2.0, there will only be a few cosmetic changes taking place as well as the usual bug fixes. Since KQ2VGA was released recently, AGS hasn't changed that much since then so there won't be as many "touch-ups" as there will be in KQ1VGA. 2.0 should have all of the bugs worked out.

~Wolfgang

Players of KQ2VGA 2.0 might find an alternative way of solving a particular puzzle. I'm not saying what it is, except that it was something that started to bother me after the game was released.
Let's call it an "Anti-MOE" style approach. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

This is my guess: The wolves scene maybe? Throw the ham at them? That's my guess. From a programmer's standpoint, this antialiasing thing sounds really cool. Unless CJ changed to Direct3D (which I highly doubt), writing a software anti-aliasing routine is nothing short of genious! I can't wait to see THAT in action! However, my only concern is that there will be a lot of extra code for the anti-aliasing, therefore slowing the end result (you have to do a lot of extra blitting).

But, with my new computer, I should have no trouble with that! I'm excited for this!

----------
Sponge Factory

It's actually an option that can be turned on/off in the external setup util. (and yeah, it's slower)

I believe somebody gave CJ a hand with the AA-code, but I can't remember who.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashn ...

I assume that QFG2 will also have the feature, and that the AA feature can be turned on or off with the external setup, meaning the setup program the comes with the game.
The Knight

Actually, Anti-aliasing will be disabled, since it makes the graphics look worse, not better.

Yeah, while the feature IS very cool in theory, it's probably turn out bad in practice. It's too much work, and it doesn't look as DOSy. But it's definately a cool idea. Just an idea of mine (depends on how the code is written,) try running at the highest resolution, it should (depending on how the code is written) make the effect more subtle.

----------
Sponge Factory

The thing is that anti-aliasing blurs the image so that all the pixels blend smoothly together when the character is scaled smaller on the screen. The result of this in KQ1VGA and KQ2VGA is that we get a very red-looking Graham sprite, which is darker than he appears at 100% (normal) zoom level.

Since some animations (in both games) use objects to simulate specific character animations, the anti-aliasing would cause a weird-looking effect where the character might look blurry, then smooth, and then blurry again. Also, this is just my opinion, but I think Anti-aliasing is more a thing for people who aren't skilled at art and seek a way to make their graphics look 'better'. I think its real purpose is for 3D games.

Some people may also be confusing anti-aliasing with alpha-blending. Anti-aliasing blends the entire sprite, but the edges still appear jagged. Alpha blending blends only the outside edges of the character sprite with the background so that he merges in smoothly with it.

Oh yeah, alpha blending is really easy to do, although it still does take up processor cycles. What I believe I will be doing for MY adventure game engine will be the option of having a scaled image. Basically, it would allow you to draw the character at all the different % scaling that you'd like, thus making it look as perfect as you can afford. Maybe though, it would add a lot of art work to the project. My question is still unanswered though. If you run this at a higher resolution, is the effect more subtle? At a higher resolution, the engine *should* be able to use less pixels for the anti aliasing, overall decreasing the amount of noticability. I don't really know though, like I said, It's good in theory, not in practice.

----------
Sponge Factory
